Our next concert will be held in Lavenham Church. Two fantastic soloists, Melinda Blackman (violin) and Jack Greenfield (cello) will be joining us to perform the Brahms Double Concerto, and we are very much looking forward to performing this amazing work. The Double Concerto was Brahms' final work for orchestra. It was composed in the summer of 1887, and first performed on 18 October of that year at the Gurzenich in Cologne. Brahms approached the project with anxiety over writing for instruments that were not his own. Modern critics champion the concerto as one of Brahms' most intricately constructed works. It is revered for its epic orchestral writing, dramatic solo interplay, and the soaring, operatic love duet of the central Andante movement.
The first set of Antonín Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances, Op. 46, is a pure, uninhibited celebration of rhythm, colour, and life. Composed in 1878 at the request of a publisher seeking the "next big thing" after the success of Brahms's Hungarian Dances, this collection of eight pieces catapulted the humble Czech composer from relative obscurity to international stardom almost overnight. But unlike Brahms, who masterfully arranged existing folk tunes, Dvořák created entirely new and original melodies that so perfectly captured the spirit of Slavic folk music that they felt instantly authentic.
